Adolph Peschke Obituary

Peschke, Adolph E. 98, of Des Moines, IA passed away peacefully with his son and daughter by his side on November 23, 2012. Adolph was born in St. Louis, MO, October 27, 1914, to Cecil and Adolph Peschke. In 1943 he married his lovely wife, Grace. They lived in Webster Groves, MO and raised their children, Don and Jayne. Adolph joined the Boy Scouts as a youth and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was proud to be continuously registered as a Scout for over 85 years. He volunteered much of his time to the Boy Scouts, particularly at Beaumont Scout Camp in St. Louis. There, he started the trail guides for weekend horse ride camping trips, taught adult Scout leaders at Wood Badge courses, and wrote the founding charter for the Eagle Scout Association. Most importantly, he headed up the Pioneering courses at five National Scout Jamborees, teaching thousands of Scouts the skills of knot-tying and building structures (bridges and towers). He wrote the Scout Pamphlet on Pioneering. For his contribution to Scouting, he was awarded the Silver Antelope, a national Boy Scout Award. Adolph is survived by his son, Donald (and Kay) Peschke of Des Moines, and his daughter, Jayne (and Ray) Donatucci of Superior, CO along with three granddaughters, Elizabeth Shepard, Anne Grace Donatucci, and Lauren Donatucci and his sister, Virginia Revelle,99, of St. Louis, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or Young Life (account 1555). Services: There will be a Celebration of Adolph's life at August Home Publishing offices, 2200 Grand Ave., Des Moines at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2012.

Adolph was a wise and generous individual who knew how to give of himself. I will miss my pioneering mentor, but will endeavor to help carry on his legacy for the benefit of future Scouting generations.

I remember well a wonderful Scouter and inspirational leader, Adolph Peschke. He served the Scouts of the St. Louis Area Council in a dedicated fashion. Thank you, Adolph, for all you have done for youth.

I first met Adolph as a volunteer with the Horse Trail Guides, Nagle Horse Camp and at Adventure Days. He was a wealth of information and stories, always patient and kind with us newbies. He touched so many lives. He will be missed.

There are "signs" of Adolph all around our camps, and he will be remembered fondly.

Many hours spent with Adolph in the Scoutcraft field at Camp May. Damon Runyon could not have created a more perfect character for the role he played in Scouting. If you met him, you would remember him. I always left an impression. There will be semaphore towers beyond the perarly gates....and they will finally be constructed correctly.

Adolph is surrounded by his many of his fellow Scouters discussing the next pioneering projects for Irondale, Lions' Den, Beaumont, or S-F. His contributions to Scouting was significant, but his contributions to the Saint Louis Council will always remain fresh when anyone asked about the pioneering kits, horse hikes, roving camps, Eagle Scout Association and on and on. On a personal note I will miss the phone conversations with him about Scouting and the many events where he was a major participant.

Don and Kay, on behalf of the St.Louis Area Council Trail Guide Committee we want to give our condolences on Adolph's death. But we have only fond memories of Adolph and all the work and leadership he gave to the council as well as the trail guide committee. We are still in full operation and have added a number of horse activities. I am the coordinator of the committee and Adolph recruited me to that position a number of years before he left St.Louis and I thank him always for getting me involved in the committee. There are still many who remember him and we all are sad at his passing but can only smile when we talked about him and all his work. Sincerely, Bob Schwedtmann

Thank you to the Peschke Family for sharing Don with us. I will always remember him any time I see a pioneering pole with painted ends. His service to Scouting will be greatly missed. He too has now gone home.
